About the CCMC
 
 
What is the Code Compliance Monitoring Committee?
 
The Code Compliance Monitoring Committee (CCMC) is an independent three person committee, established in accordance with the Code of Banking Practice 2003 (the Code).
 
The primary purpose of the CCMC is to ensure that banks that have adopted the Code meet the standards of good banking practice set out in the Code.
 
The CCMC is made up of an independent chairman, a consumer representative and a banking industry representative.
 
Brian Given (Dip Law) joined the CCMC as Chairperson in 2009. Brian is a lawyer with an extensive career in the NSW Public Service, including more than 20 years senior executive experience in the Office of Fair Trading where his responsibilities included a strong focus on law enforcement and industry compliance with fair trading principles. Prior to that he worked with the Commonwealth Trade Practices Commission (predecessor to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission), including two years as NSW Regional Director. During his public sector career Brian also held many official appointments including as a trustee of the national Travel Compensation Fund, a trustee of the Financial Counselling Trust Fund, and chair of the Co-operatives Council of NSW, as well as having chaired a number of the advisory committees of the national Standing Committee of Officials of Consumer Affairs. In 2008 Brian was awarded the Public Service Medal for outstanding public service in promotig industry compliance with fair trading laws.
 

Nicola Howell is the consumer representative on the CCMC. Nicola Nicola is an Associate Lecturer in Law at the Queensland University of Technology. Her research interests include the law and regulation of consumer issues generally, consumer credit, and bankruptcy. Until April 2004, Nicola was the Director of the Centre for Credit and Consumer Law, an academic centre based at Griffith University. She has worked at both the Australian Securities and Investments Commission and the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission in senior policy and project roles. She also has strong links with consumer and community organisations, developed through her government career and through policy work with the Consumer Credit Legal Services in NSW and Victoria.

 

Julie Abramson is the person on the CCMC with relevant senior level banking experience. Julie is a lawyer with a background in public policy and financial regulation including as a Senior Adviser to Government, with the Australian Securities and Investments Commission and the National Australia Bank. Over a 4 ½ year period, Julie held a number of senior roles at the NAB including the implementation of FSR, Code related issues and regulatory compliance. In particular she has worked very closely with the retail bank across consumer issues.

 

The CCMC is staffed by a full time Chief Executive Officer (Damian Paull), a part time Case Manager (Michael Kane) and part time Case Officer (Tara McInnes).
